For Your Homestead
"I can think of no better form of personal involvement in the cure of the environment than that of gardening. A person who is growing a garden, if he is growing it organically, is improving a piece of the world." — Wendell Berry
Ready-to-Lay Hens
Golden Buff/Comets approaching laying age — 16 weeks.
Each spring we offer ready-to-lay pullets once they approach a laying age of 16 weeks. We leave their beaks intact and feed only an organic ration of an appropriate protein percentage to achieve a healthy weight and a good laying frame.
We raise Golden Buff/Comets sourced from Eagle Nest Poultry as day-old unmedicated chicks. These are hardy, productive layers well-suited to a small homestead flock — calm in disposition and consistent in production through the season.
What You're Getting
- Beaks intact — no debeaking
- Raised on organic feed only
- Unmedicated from day-old chicks
- Golden Buff/Comet strain — reliable layers
- Approaching laying age at 16 weeks

Transplants
Transplants set the stage for a successful season in the garden. Healthy plants, photosynthesizing efficiently, are the source of root exudates that feed the microorganisms which return the favor by feeding the plant compounds and nutrients otherwise inaccessible.
To get this beautiful symbiotic system moving, we use organic seed — with a few exceptions, one of which is Sungold cherry tomatoes — and organic potting mix from Tilth or Ohio Earth Food. In recent years we began exploring a variety of certified organic mineral sprays to address micronutrient deficiencies in transplants.
As our understanding of soil biology and the strength of multiple botanical plant families expands, we are excited to seed a variety of companion seeds with our usual suite of seasonal vegetable transplants to promote a healthy community of soil microorganisms in each of our soil blocks.

Classes
We are always interested in sharing our unique story — but with the challenges of managing a farm and family, we have limited opportunities, typically in the winter months, to do so. If that timing can work for your organization, please reach out to discuss a talk or farm tour.
Details on formal homestead classes will be added here as availability develops. In the meantime, see the More Info page for past podcast appearances and speaking engagements.
